The Community of St. Moritz
St. Moritz is situated at 1.822 m above sea level in the canton of Grisons. The community has 5.119 inhabitants and covers an area of 28,69 km².
The Weather in St. Moritz
Mean annual temperature is 1,2 degree Celsius, annual precipitation is 700 mm. Rainfall is at its highest in August at 99 mm, at its lowest in February at 25 mm. It’s warmest in July, coolest in January.
In St. Moritz – one of the most famous winter resorts in the Alps – top-class sports events take place throughout the year: sailing spectacles such as the St. Moritz Match Race, the Polo World Cup on Snow or the City Race in the centre of St. Moritz.
The St. Moritz area is of outstanding natural beauty: the plateau at 700m is blessed with a wealth of lakes. Mountains such as Corvatsch and Piz Gloria rise on both sides of the valley towered by the snow-capped peak of the Engadin (Piz Bernina 4068m).
In winter St. Moritz has two ski areas. Cable-cars start in the village and take you directly to the ski area of Coviglia, venue of the 2003 ski world championships. While skiing on one of the many ski-runs, enjoy the view over the picturesque valley.
The ski area of Corvatsch is located on the other side of the valley. At this altitude snow can be guaranteed and both skiers and snowboarders will love the perfectly groomed pistes.
In summer 400 km of mountain bike trails are available between Lake Silvaplanasee and Lake St. Moritz. Hikers can explore nature on 580 km of marked hiking trails. If staying at a St. Moritz hotel, one cable-car ride is free. This will take you a little closer to the 3000m Piz Nair and Diavolezza. The Swiss National Park with local flora and fauna is also very close.
Cultural events are organized all year in St. Moritz, which is also member of the “Best of the Alps” Club like Zermatt or Lech am Arlberg. Many artists from Germany and Italy perform at the Celerina New Orleans Festival in summer. In winter the Snow and Symphony Graubünden Festival includes international orchestras and soloists.
