The Community of Zermatt
Zermatt is situated at 1.608 m above sea level in the canton of Valais. The community has 5.634 inhabitants and covers an area of 242,67 km².
The Weather in Zermatt
Mean annual temperature is 3,5 degree Celsius, annual precipitation is 611 mm. Rainfall is at its highest in May at 61 mm, at its lowest in September at 41 mm. It’s warmest in July, coolest in January.
One of the most famous places in the Alps to enjoy great holidays is Zermatt. The 4477m Matterhorn is considered an iconic emblem of the Alps and helped the Swiss Zermatt to gain international reputation. Tourism structures developed early and gave the little town its unique image.
Snow paradise – from Switzerland to Italy
The Zermatt ski area is divided into three parts all linked by state-of the-art lifts. Skiing and snowboarding on a total of 313 kilometres of pistes between Sunnega, Gornergrat, the Kleinmatterhorn ski area and the Italian Cervinia. The view from Findeln to the Matterhorn is absolutely fantastic.
The town of Zermatt has a lively pedestrian zone with many shops, boutiques and cafés. The historic structure of the houses has never been changed. Cars are not allowed in this Valais town! Electric cars are used for transportation. Quality tourism is guaranteed as Zermatt is also member of the renowned “Best of the Alps” Club such as St. Moritz and Lech am Arlberg.
Among the many top-class hotels in Zermatt, there are also less expensive offers. Some holidaymakers book a hotel or apartment in Täsch and take the world famous Glacier-Express to Zermatt.
Summer skiing on Kleinmatterhorn
In Zermatt skiing is also possible in summer. The glacier paradise of Klein Matterhorn is about 4000m high. 20 kilometres of pistes make it the largest glacier ski area in the world. Hikers and mountain bikers take the Gornergrat railway to 3000m and enjoy the fantastic view to the highest Swiss mountain (Monte Rosa) and 28 peaks higher than 4000m.
