Where is the Sierra Nevada?

The Sierra Nevada is a mountain range in the autonomous region of Andalusia, the western part belongs to the province of Granada, the eastern to the province of Almería. 100km Sierra Nevada is part of the Baetic System, which is a 600km long mountain range stretching from the Bay of Cádiz to the Valencia region. The Sierra Nevada runs parallel to the Mediterranean Sea, its foothills form the cliff line in and around Almería. Core area is the 86,208 ha Sierra Nevada National Park, since 1999 a nature reserve. This region in the south of Spain is a very popular holiday destination attracting tourists from all over the world.

The Sierra Nevada and its 3,482m Mulhacén is the highest mountain range of the Iberian Peninsula. Mulhacén is the second highest mountain in Spain only topped by Pico del Teide on Tenerife. How is the weather in Sierra Nevada?

Andalusia enjoys a Mediterranean climate with different variations depending on the altitude. The summers along the coast and the plains are very hot with temperatures above 40°C, whereas you find pleasant 20°C on the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. During the hot season there is hardly any rain, but it snows heavily from November to the beginning of April at the Sierra Nevada. Granada, Almerìa, Motril, Almunecar and all other places at lower elevations hardly see temperatures below 15°C even in the winter. This popular winter sports resort ranges from 2,100 m to 3,282 m in elevation. The bottom station is at Pradollano, from there you take the lifts to the highest ski resort in Spain, also being one of the snow-surest due to its elevation. Sierra Nevada ski resort is also the most southern of all European ski resorts. In clear days you not only see the Mediterranean Sea but also the coastline of Morocco. Sierra Nevada in the summer is perfect for passionate and enthusiastic hikers and climbers. Visit "Sierra Nevada Ski Station" at 2,550m, there you find the highest hotel in Spain, a few gift shops, and several snack bars. Cars are not allowed any higher than "Sierra Nevada Ski Station". Nevertheless, there is a lot to discover for bikers and hikers. You find information material on fauna and flora at the national park centre and the little huts along the road.
