Fendels

Fendels looks back on a long history. The place was first mentioned in documents in 1297 as exclave of the Hanseatic League.

Today, Fendels is a small Tyrolean community with about 230 residents. It lies at an elevation of 500 meters. Before the road was built, the village could only be reached via cable car. The region’s old farmsteads have always had a very Rhaeto-Romanic character, but unfortunately many of the buildings were destroyed by two big fires in the 20th century. Some of the farms and the parish church are witnesses of this period.

Fendels is also a small ski resort featuring around 10 kilometres of ski trails suitable for all levels of ability. The ski lifts are accessible from the village, but you can also leave the car in the valley and take the gondola in Ried.

In summer Fendels is the perfect starting point for mountain biking or hiking tours. “Fallender Bach”, a 160 m waterfall is one of the many natural attractions to be seen en route.

Things to do in Fendels

Fendels is a small and contemplative place. The region is known for the old carnival tradition of ‘Blochziehen’ which takes place every four years in Fiss or St. Leonhard. ‘Bloch’ is a huge tree trunk which disguised carnival figures haul through the villages. Finally, the trunk will be auctioned and all people involved have to take off their masks, and then the party really begins.
