The Principality of Andorra is located in the eastern Pyrenees and with 468 square kilometers of land area it is among the smallest countries in Europe. It borders France to the east and Spain to the west. The country of Andorra is unique with respect to the Head of State because it has two foreign representatives: the Spanish Bishop of Urgell and the President of France.

Although the origin of today’s Andorra dates back in the 13th Century, it was only established as a sovereign democratic state in 1993. Andorra la Vella is the capital of the Principality and is very well-known for shopping in the many duty-free stores. The 4,100 inhabitants of the country’s largest city Canillo live close to the French border. Escaldes-Engordany is a “hotspot” in the truest sense of the word. The hot sulfur springs have made the town famous far beyond the borders of Andorra. The hot springs are well worth a visit.

Although the small country may not be rich in natural resources (only 2% of the land is arable), with its location in the middle of the Pyrenees it enjoys active tourism – especially in winter. The two ski resorts of Vallnord and Grandvalira offer winter sports enthusiasts over 250 perfectly groomed ski slopes. But in summer as well, the two nature parks Parc Natural de la Vall de Sorteny and Parc Natural Comunal de les Valls del Comapedrosa invite numerous nature-loving visitors to hike, horseback ride and explore. Andorra is also a paradise for mountaineers and climbers, as there are 65 mountain peaks here that exceed the 2,000 meter mark.
