Situated in the north of Andorra at an altitude of 1,530 metres, the municipality of Canillo is home to about 4,150 inhabitants. The river Valira divides the community in two parts. The town’s name derives from the white mountains/rocks. The centre has a medieval character. Canillo is not only a popular mountain and winter resort, it is also well known for its many national treasures such as the church of Sant Serni, featuring Andorra’s highest belfry with 27 metres.
The community of Canillo includes the famous winter sports resort of Soldeu. In summer this is a perfect place for cycling and golfing.
Canillo has an alpine climate with mostly snowy winters and temperatures around zero degrees; the summer months enjoy pleasant temperatures at 25°Celsius. Spring sees the most rain, while July is the driest month.
Canillo is a very popular mountain and winter sports resort: skiing, snow shoe hiking, climbing, skating, kids’ park …. there won’t be a dull moment. There is also a walking path connecting the various national treasures (churches, cemeteries, old mill).
If the weather does not play along, then visit the motorcycle museum displaying historic bikes from the 1900s to the present.
The town itself celebrates numerous folk festivals such as the “Burning of January” (Crema del Gener). On the last day of January a tree is set on fire – depending on how long the tree burns, the duration and the strength of the remaining winter days are calculated.
