City of Encamp

Encamp is a city in the center of Andorra located at 1,300 meters above sea level. With almost 12,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest city in Andorra after the capital Andorra la Vella and Las Escaldes. The 74 square km municipality bears the same name, consisting of the towns of El Tremat, La Mosquera, Les Bons, Vilain and Pas de la Casa. Encamp in the west and Pas de la Casa in the east form the two centers of the municipal territory, separated by 10 km as the crow flies. France borders the municipality directly in the east. Because of the geographical proximity, French is often spoken in addition to Spanish and Catalan, especially in Pas de la Casa.

Weather in Encamp

The climate in Andorra is rather cold and wet due to the altitude and location in the bordering mountain ranges of the Pyrenees between France and Spain. June and July are particularly dry and temperatures rarely reach more than 28° C. Snow mainly falls in December and January and, due to the constantly cold weather, stays until March, providing excellent ski conditions. Andorra is now also regarded as an exclusive winter sports location.

What's happening in Encamp?

A tourism highlight in Encamp is the “Funicamp” (Spanish for funicular cable car), a 6.2 km cable car with which you can get to the top of the Valle de Cortals at 2,500 m in less than 20 minutes. Also above the town is Engolasters Lake, whose origin and history is accompanied by numerous legends.

The western part of Encamp is the gateway to the Grandvalira ski area, which is divided into different sectors. But the place is not only a top winter destination, it offers many interesting things to do in summer too: from hiking to climbing and fishing to annual festivals such as Carnival or traditional Christmas celebrations – the historic town has much to offer, with its buildings that combine tradition and modernity.
