Carinthia is the southernmost province in Austria and well-known first and foremost for its lakes and mountainous landscapes. With its land area of 9,535.97 km² and 561,335 inhabitants, Carinthia is the sixth largest province in Austria. The provincial capital is Klagenfurt.
The province’s many beautiful lakes such as Lake Wörthersee, Lake Millstättersee, Lake Ossiach and Lake Weissensee and smaller ones too such as Lake Faakersee, Lake Klopeinsee and Lake Presseggersee all contribute to Carinthia‘s booming summer tourism.
In the nature-protected areas of the Nockberg and Hohe Tauern national parks visitors can enjoy nature of all kinds from the highest peaks to the alpine landscapes of lower mountain ranges and lovely gentle plains.
Apart from off-road biking on easy but large-scale trails such as the Drau-Radweg, the Nockberg region also attracts hundreds of mountain bikers to its free-ride paradise; or you can choose an appropriate route for your level and explore the area comfortably on a racing bicycle.
Carinthia’s 9 golf courses will raise the pulse of any golf enthusiast. These range from the northernmost course at 1,100 m above sea level to another one in Grado/Italy which belongs to Carinthia’s golf co-operative.
Snow as far down as the valleys, ski fun with Mediterranean chic - that’s Carinthia in winter. Winter sports opportunities range from high alpine skiing in Heiligenblut, Ankogel and on the Mölltal glacier to cozier spots such as Innerkrems and the Koralpe. For every sports fan there’s the right winter resort whether for alpine skiing, Nordic walking or just a stroll in the snow. Experience the fun of cross-border winter sports in Nassfeld and on the Katschberg.
Carinthia’s many lakes are the perfect winter playground for speed skaters, ice golfers, ice hockey players and ice skaters. Lake Weissensee covers an area of 6.5 km² and is Europe‘s largest area of natural ice.
