The district capital of the Austrian Lavant Valley, Wolfsberg, is nestled between the slopes of Koralpe and Saualpe Mountains.  Located at an altitude of 463 m it is home to 25,083 people and covers an area of 279 km². Aside from Sölden and Vienna, Wolfsberg is one of the largest Austrian municipalities.

Wolfberg’s Old Town is rich in historical documents, buildings and sights. The landmark is the neo-Gothic Wolfsberg Castle mentioned for the first time in 1178. Today, the building serves as an arts and exhibition centre. Hohe Platz Square with buildings dating from the 16th and 17th century forms the heart of the city. St. Markus city parish church is the oldest and most renowned building in Wolfsberg. It dates from 1242 and boasts a 72 m tall tower with 5 storeys.

Wolfsberg sees the most rain in July with 113.4mm, while January is the driest month with 24.9mm of precipitation. July is the hottest month of the year with an average of 18.1°C, January is the coldest with -3.6°C. Lavant Valley is a very sunny region with more than 1,800 hours of sunshine per year.

Surrounded by Kor- and Saualpe Mountains, Wolfsberg offers an excellent mix of various landscapes. Traditional huts, mountain villages and impressive scenery on the one hand, shopping and arts centre with many sights on the other hand.


Wolfsberg’s ski resorts, Koralpe and Klippitztörl, are known for their family-friendly offers, featuring ski trails for all abilities, artificial snow systems and state-of-the-art ski lifts.  The little ones will definitely enjoy their time at the ski resorts. But there are also a lot of other things to explore: more than 200 km of ski touring trails, tobogganing runs, ice skating and snowshoe hikes.

Klippitztörl ski resort at 1,980 m boasts 28 km of ski trails. Enjoy one of the guided snowshoe hikes through pristine winter wilderness. There are 6 waymarked tours to discover an area of 70 km; snowshoe rental service available. Koralpe at 2,140 m features 30 km of pistes. Experts will love the carving trail or the freeriding Terrain.


Lavanttal Valley has a great variety of walks and hikes from enchanting mountain walks, breathtaking looped walks (in good weather view from Koralpe to Großglockner mountain range), climbing parks and summer tobogganing runs. 230 km “Panoramaweg Südalpen“ walk  takes you all the way to the Styrian border; 120 km “Koralm-Kristall-Trail” leads through mighty geological formations and sparkling crystals; Lavanttal Valley stands out for its offers and for the quality of walking trails it provides through varied landscapes.  In 2013 Wolfsberg was awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal and has since been Austria’s “first hiking city“. Lavanttal Valley orchards are famous and provide excellent fruits for the local apple wine and apple cider.
