Lower Austria covers an area of 19,177.78 km² and is Austria’s largest province, bordering on the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia to the northeast, Burgenland to the southeast and Upper Austria to the west; it also encircles the city of Vienna. Lower Austria has 1,602,152 inhabitants and the provincial capital is St. Pölten.
There has been an enormous upswing in tourism in Lower Austria on account of visitors coming from eastern and central European countries. Since the end of the 20th century visitor numbers have increased in the country around the Wachau UNESCO World Cultural Heritage area. Tourist activity is largely focused on the great cultural centers of the province such as its many monasteries and castles. But a holiday on a farm is also a great attraction and becoming ever more popular.
In winter Lower Austria’s ski regions mostly attract visitors from the east or, on a day-visit basis, from Vienna. The best known ski areas are Annaberg, Hochkar, Puchberg/Schneeberg and Lackenhof/Ötscher.feratel>Webcams / weather>Austria>Niederösterreich
