Salzburg is Austria‘s sixth largest province covering an area of 7,154.23 km². It borders on Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia and Tyrol as well as Italy and Germany. Its population of 531,305 makes Salzburg one of the smaller provinces. The provincial capital is the eponymous city of Salzburg.
In the summer the most popular leisure pursuits by far are mountain hiking and cycling. Hiking and trekking tours range from technically straightforward excursions in the Pinzgau and Pongau areas of the Grasberg Mountains to high alpine mountaineering in the Hohe Tauern region.
Cycling enthusiasts will find everything from easy family routes to challenging tours over the Grossglockner. The Tauern cycle path is especially popular and after the Danube cycle way is the second most important cycle route attracting in the season 30,000 cycling visitors. In Salzburg there are about 2,000 kilometers of sign-posted cycle paths and 3,000 kilometers of mountain bike trails.
Apart from that, Salzburg has the highest concentration of golf courses in the whole of Austria; moreover, its alpine foothill lakes and those of the Salzkammergut too are paradise for water-sports enthusiasts.
Across 22 ski regions, cable cars and lifts (more than 580!) take visitors up into the mountains to enjoy 1,700 km of beautifully prepared slopes, glorious views and traditional ski huts. The best-known Salzburg ski areas are: Flachau, Großarl, Kaprun, Leogang, Maria Alm, Saalbach, Obertauern and also Zauchensee. There are about 2,200 km of cross-country trails to get cross-country skiers’ hearts beating that bit faster!
Snowshoe hiking is a great way to feel in harmony with nature. And for anyone who wants to go for a really comfortable ride, then being tucked inside a warm blanket in a horse-drawn carriage and riding through the winter landscape takes will be the choice.feratel>Webcams / weather>Austria>Salzburg
