Hochfügen is a ski village and ski area located in the Tyrol Ziller Valley and is part of the Fügenberg municipality. The ski resort was established in the 1960s and 1970s and comprises several hotels, restaurants and weekend cottages as well as 31 ski lifts, 82 kilometres of piste and 9 kilometres of ski cross-country trails ranging from 1,500m to 2,500m. In 2004 Hochfügen and Hochzillertal ski resorts were connected.
Only about 15 people are permanently residing in Hochfügen, in winter, however, the population increases to a few hundred residents. The most famous resident is Alexander Fankhauser, a very popular Austrian TV chef. Alexander Fankhauser is owner of the highest gourmet restaurant in Tyrol.
Summer in Hochfügen is quieter and calmer and means hiking and climbing tours to the surrounding mountains such as Gamsstein, Gilfert or Kraxentrager.
The average yearly temperature is 8°C, the yearly precipitation average is about 1.106,6 mm. July sees the most rainfall with 163,4 mm, December is the driest month with 45,1 mm. July is the hottest month, January is the coldest. Ski season, therefore, starts in November and ends in April.
Hochfügen is a very active place. How could it be any other way? One of the highlights is the rope race taking place at the end of the season in April. Rope teams of three men/women participate in a ski race. It is not about the single performance, but all about team spirit. The Zillertal Bike Challenge, one of the toughest mountain biking races, stops in Hochfügen on the first weekend in July.
