The City of Innsbruck
Innsbruck is the capital of the state of Tyrol and, with a population of about 120.000, is the fifth largest city in Austria. Innsbruck is situated at an altitude of 574 m and covers an area of 104,91 km².
Archaeological finds suggest that Innsbruck was first settled in the Neolithic period. The district of Wilten (Veldidena) was established by the Romans.

Innsbruck, due to its ideal geographic position in the heart of the Alps, looks back on a rich and varied past. Tourists from all over the world come and visit the city of Innsbruck throughout the year.
The Golden Roof is the city’s most famous landmark: this magnificent oriel window roofed with 2.657 gilded copper tiles was built for Emperor Maximilian I by Niclas Türing the Older. According to the inscription it was finished in 1500. Also worth visiting are the Cathedral of St. James, Helbling House, Town Tower and Annasäule, which forms the centre of Innsbruck’s main street, Maria-Theresien-Straße. The famous Triumphal Arch is at the south end of the street. Close to the Old town you find the Imperial Palace and the Court Church with 28 larger-than-life bronze statues. Other historic sites are Riesenrundgemälde (gigantic panoramic painting of the Battle of Berg Isel in 1809), Convent of Wilten, Wilten Basilica and Ambras Castle.
