Vorarlberg, with its provincial capital Bregenz, lies in the west of Austria. It covers an area of 2,601.48 km² and has 388,225 inhabitants and as such is the second smallest Austrian province. Vorarlberg borders on Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein to the west and south, to the east is the Austrian province of Tyrol and to the north it shares a frontier with Germany.
Lake Constance, shared with Switzerland and Germany, is immensely important as a tourist destination. The Lake Constance shipping company runs for tourist purposes and mostly in the summer months. Every year thousands of people visit one of the largest islands of Lake Constance – Mainau, the Isle of Flowers.
The destination for many climbers from all over Europe is the Zimba. It is one of the best-known mountains for climbing in Vorarlberg with a height of 2,645 m. The mountain is shaped like a horn and is thus also known as the Matterhorn of Vorarlberg. The approaches to the climbing tours are not very difficult but generally climbs here should not be under-estimated. The highest mountain is the Piz Buin in the Silvretta range at 3,312 m.
In Vorarlberg cycle and mountain bike excursions take you over sedate high altitude trails, on mountain-bike safaris and challenging summit tours. The views are stupendous and never fail to amaze – ranging from mountain lakes to alpine meadows, craggy rocks and high mountain ranges. Apart from mountain routes, the Lake Constance cycle way is the most popular in Europe. The 270 km circular path following the Austrian, Swiss and German shoreline takes you past visitor attractions aplenty.
Vorarlberg’s considerable and numerous ski regions have made a name for themselves as prestigious winter sports destinations, enticing skiers and snowboarders in droves to this little land in the very west of Austria. The large ski areas around the Arlberg with kilometers of well-prepared slopes in all degrees of difficulty dominate the winter sports holiday market in the province.feratel>Webcams / weather>Austria>Vorarlberg
