The city of Scherpenheuvel

Scherpenheuvel is a city in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant, 55 km northeast of the capital Brussels. The first records of the city date back to the early 14th Century when a statue of the Virgin Mary under an oak tree attracted the interest of many believers. Today, 22,000 people live in the small city.

“Scherpeheuvel” means “sharp, pointy hill” and expresses the geographical features of the region. Flemish Brabant is characterized by a flat to hilly geography – ideal for a cycling holiday. The more than 1,800 km long bicycle path network opens up a variety of tours and the flat to moderate grades are suitable for cyclists of every fitness level. Restaurants and inns invite users to take a pleasant break or rest along the bike paths.

Scherpenheuvel is famous for the Baroque pilgrimage church “Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel”, also called the Basilica of Our Lady. The Basilica is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Belgium and thousands of believers go on a pilgrimage here every year. And a very prominent pilgrim was once among them: Pope John Paul II paid a visit to Scherpenheuvel and prayed in the Basilica. The feratel webcam shows a panoramic view of the park and the main entrance of the basilica.
