The village of Schierke am Brocken is a district of Wernigerode and covers an area of 40,1 km². Located in the Sachsen-Anhalt county of Harz (Hochharz), Schierke borders Harz National Park to the north. The district’s local mountain, Brocken (1.142 m), is the highest mountain in North Germany.
From the 1890s to the 1940s Schierke was known as “St. Moritz of the north”. Splendid mansions and hotel resorts are witnesses to this epoch. Tourism stagnated in the post-war years and it was only after Die Wende that the historic mansions were restored. Schierke also found its way into literature: The Walpurgisnacht scene in Goethe’s Faust is set in the "District of Schierke and Elend".
Schierke lies in the moderate climate zone with an average temperature of 5,3°C, the yearly precipitation is about 1.275 mm. July is the hottest month with an average of 15,5°C and highs of 31,5°C. December, January and February are the coldest months of the year with an average temperature below freezing. Schierke sees the most rain in December and January with 154mm and 145 mm respectively, while April is the driest month with 54 mm of precipitation. Brocken Mountain is known for extreme weather situations and sudden change of weather.
Schierke is a well-known winter sports and spa resort. In winter the village boasts many cross-country skiing trails, a naturally frozen ice rink and a great number of winter hiking routes. Visitors in summer will be thrilled by the many opportunities of outdoor activities, such as hikes to Brocken Mountain, Wurmberg (via Wumbergstieg), Leistenklippe, Wandernadel, Feuersteinklippe or Harz Border Walk. Eckerlochstieg is one of the steepest, but also one of the most beautiful hiking trails of the Harz Mountains. Brockenhaus Museum at the top of Brocken Mountain provides an insight to the mountain’s history and nature.
Other activities: Nordic walking, climbing (all degrees of difficulty, outdoors and indoors, also with guide), Segway tours, bicycle tours (e-bikes for rent in the village) and wagon rides.
Schierke mountain biking routes are connected to Volksbankarena and Wernigeröd mountain biking region. The trails are long, steep and challenging – the yearly Endurothon-Mountain Bike Race is well known among enthusiasts. Harz National Park offers guided hikes, adventure tours, art and cultural events or exhibitions. The Harz light railway recalls former times and takes visitors through breathtaking landscapes.
