With a surface area of 170 km square km and about 35,000 inhabitants, Wernigerode is located in Saxony-Anhalt in the Federal Republic of Germany and is known as the “colorful town in the Harz”.
The average annual temperature is 9.5 degrees Celsius and the annual precipitation reaches 500 mm. Wernigerode records the largest amounts of precipitation in July with 54 mm and the lowest in February with 30 mm. The hottest month is July and the coldest is January.
The town of Wernigerode is the perfect starting point for hikes in the Harz Mountains in summer. The many hiking trails are complemented by cycling and mountain biking trails in the Harz foothills. Buildings from the Middle Ages dominate the old town of Wernigerode. In June, you will find the town hall Festival here with a dance competition and midnight ball. In summer, events such as the Johannisfest midsummer festival and the Wernigerode Schlossfestspiele castle festival attract many visitors.
In winter, Wernigerode’s Schierke district offers cross-country skiing on cross-country ski trails, along with ice skating and sledding. In December, the half-timbered houses in the old town transform into a magical Christmas world with the Christmas market.
