The Principality of Liechtenstein is located in Central Europe and is one of the smallest countries in the world. The land area covers only 160 square kilometers and borders Austria in the east and Switzerland in the west where the Rhine forms a natural border. 36,000 people live in the small principality, nearly half of which consists of mountains. There are 32 peaks in Liechtenstein over 2,000 meters high. The highest point is the summit of Vorder Grauspitz at 2,599 meters. From here people can enjoy an impressive panorama view of the Rätikon range and the neighboring countries.
The principality was created in 1719 from the unification of the dominion of Schellenberg and the countship of Vaduz. Prince Hans Adam, who bought these two counties from the indebted rulers of Hohenems, installed the princely seat at the time in Feldkirch, Austria. Today Vaduz is the political center of the country. With the Customs Union Treaty with Switzerland in 1923, the country, until then poorly economically developed, of Liechtenstein boomed and is now one of the few countries without a national debt.
The small country has a number of highlights ready for vacationers. The Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (Art Museum) awaits its visitors with modern and contemporary art; at the Landesmuseum (National Museum) you can admire the Crown Jewels and other historically valuable pieces from the history of the principality. Also recommended is a visit to the Prince's Royal winery where wine lovers can enjoy tasting the fine wines.
An extensive hiking trail system runs throughout the Rätikon range. With its exposed sections, the well-known Fürstensteig is only recommended for experienced hikers. Malbun is the family-friendly ski area in the region and has reliable snow conditions with an altitude of 1,600 to over 2,000 meters. The feratel live webcam shows what’s happening in the ski area.
