The valley of Lötschental is embedded between the Alps of canton Berne and Valais. It can be easily reached in 90 minutes by direct train “Lötschberger” from Berne to Goppenstein where public transportation assures the continuation of your journey by bus. Besides, the valley of Lötschental can be also reached by car using the BLS public car transportation line Kandersteg – Goppenstein.
The unique flora and fauna, the quaint and traditional villages as well as the loveliest upper valley in the whole of the Alps makes the Lötschental one of the most natural and most untouched valleys in the canton Valais. With more than 200 kilometers of signed hiking trails it offers a perfect paradise for passioned hikers and mountaineers. The significant mountain range surrounding the valley is dominated by its “own” mountain Bietschhorn at an altitude of 3’934 meters which belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage region Jungfrau-Aletsch. The valley Lötschental extends over a length of 30 kilometers and represents the largest side valley in the Northern part of the canton Valais.
The winter sports area Lauchernalp with its 7 ski facilities and about 55 kilometers of well-prepared ski slopes is an attraction for everybody. The large free-ride area is well known among snowboarders and free-riders, offering unique and breathtaking powder snow runs. Non-skiers can enjoy the winter sports area by walking on the highest winter hiking trail in Europe at 3’000 meter altitude, which provides an unforgettable panoramic view on more than 40 mountain peaks of the famous four-thousand-meter mountain range from Valais. Qualified ski instructors warmly welcome the children in the playground area “Kinderland” where kids can experience their first ski lessons under the motto “Play and Fun”.
The Lötschentaler fable trail which leads from Lauchernalp’s mountain station to Fafleralp is a special attraction for families. The trail extends over 9 kilometers and lasts about 2 ½ hours. Surrounded by an impressive and remarkable Alpine panoramic view, your walk is accompanied by a story-teller narrating about 10 different fairytales. The interested hiker is being taken into the world of legends and myths during the entire tour. The narratives can be easily retrieved on your smartphone by scanning the relevant QR-codes, which can be found on the tree trunks at the beginning of each trail.
