Where is Freyung?

The town of Freyung is home to 35 people and is situated in the Bavarian forest only 27km from the Austrian and 17km from the Czech border. It is the county seat of the Freyung-Grafenau district/Lower Bavaria. Passau is 33km from Freyung, Grafenau 18 km. The town sits on the bank of Saußbach in the southeast of the Bavarian Forest and north of the Bavarian Forest National Reserve.

Freyung in Bavaria is also part of FerienLand National Park comprising Sonnenwald region, tri-border region, Ilztal & Dreiburgenland and Drei im Woid.

There are a few museums in Freyung, such as Jagd Land Fluss (Hunt Country River) Museum at Wolfstein Castle or Winterberg Folk Musem in the Bohemian Forest – as well as notable buildings (e.g., catholic church of Maria Himmelfahrt or the catholic pilgrimage church St. Anna in Kreuzberg). Find some peace and relax at Auen or Town Park. For more action visit the outdoor or indoor swimming pool, the ice sports centre, the gym, or the sports ground.

In the summer, this region is very popular for its extensive hiking tours. Winter sports enthusiasts from all over world visit Freyung to discover the region’s ski resorts, offering stunning views of the Bavarian Forest and fantastic slopes set against dreamlike scenery. Ski pistes are suitable for both beginner and advanced skiers, and x-country skiers will enjoy the 100km of x-country ski trails. Dreisessel, Lusen and Großer Rachel are the most popular mountains of the region.

In the winter Freyung is a very popular holiday destination for families. A 540 m two-person chairlift takes winter sports enthusiasts to the top, and if that’s not enough action, try night skiing. Beginners can take some lessons at the ski school and rent equipment.

Freyung-Kreuzberg X-country skiing

X-country skiers love this region featuring perfectly groomed trails set against stunning scenery suitable for beginners and experts. Kreuzberg is connected to the x-country trails of the Bavarian Forest National Park as well as to the Bohemian Forest National reserve.

Other winter sports activities are ice-skating, tobogganing, winter hiking, snowshoeing or Nordic walking. Relax in the indoor swimming pool or the sauna.

Freyung enjoys a warm and temperate climate. June to September is the hottest time of the year, January is the coldest month with an average of 1°C. July is the driest month of the year.
