Town of Wernigerode

With a surface area of 170 km square km and about 35,000 inhabitants, Wernigerode is located in Saxony-Anhalt in the Federal Republic of Germany and is known as the “colorful town in the Harz”.

What’s happening in Wernigerode

The town of Wernigerode is the perfect starting point for hikes in the Harz Mountains in summer. The many hiking trails are complemented by cycling and mountain biking trails in the Harz foothills. Buildings from the Middle Ages dominate the old town of Wernigerode. In June, you will find the town hall Festival here with a dance competition and midnight ball. In summer, events such as the Johannisfest midsummer festival and the Wernigerode Schlossfestspiele castle festival attract many visitors.

In winter, Wernigerode’s Schierke district offers cross-country skiing on cross-country ski trails, along with ice skating and sledding. In December, the half-timbered houses in the old town transform into a magical Christmas world with the Christmas market.
