Where is Munich?
Munich is the capital of the German state of Bavaria and lies at an altitude of 519 m. The city covers an area of 310,74 km² and is home to 1,4m people. The city of Munich (= monk settlement) got its name from the area’s first monastery which was founded in the 8th century. Since then monasteries have always played an important role in the city’s history, especially as the monks introduced the tradition of brewing. Munich is the world’s capital of brewing. Each year the love for beer is celebrated at the renowned Munich Oktoberfest. Millions of people from every part of the world come and visit this traditional festival taking place from the last week of September to the first week of October.

The capital of Bavaria is one of the most important economic and cultural centres of Germany. Munich International Airport is the second largest Airport in Germany after Frankfurt. The airport is also known for its sophisticated architecture for which it was awarded the “European Steel Design Award” in 2005.
Munich is a financial centre and a global city and holds the headquarters of numerous listed companies such as Siemens, Allianz or BMW. BMW has its main production facility in Munich. The BMW Museum and the futuristic BMW World (exhibition, delivery and event location) reflect the importance of this company for Munich.
The city of Munich is also home to Alte and Neue Pinakothek, which are among the most prestigious museums of the world. Marienplatz is the city’s most famous square with the Old and the New Town Hall. In winter the Christmas market on Marienplatz attracts many tourists.
Munich is a major European cultural centre and is home to some of the world’s most important opera houses such as the Bavarian State Opera which staged many premiers, one of them being “Tristan and Isolde” by Richard Wagner.
Munich is a green city boasting numerous parks. Englischer Garten, covering an area of 3.75 km2, is one of the world's largest urban public parks. The city’s zoo Tierpark Hellabrunn was the first international Geozoo where the animals were displayed in zoogeographic regions.
Munich is also a famous sports city. It hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics (overshadowed by the so-called Munich massacre). The most famous Munich sports club is FC Bayern München, playing in the German Bundesliga since the 1960s.
