Where is Zermatt?

The famous municipality of Zermatt in the Switzerland is located in the Visp district/Valais canton and lies an altitude of 1,608 m above sea level. It covers an area of 242.67 km2 and is home to 5,759 people. Population density amounts to 24 inhabitants per km². Located at the foot of the Swiss landmark, the village provides stunning views of Matterhorn, the highest mountain of the Alps.

Gornergrat near Zermatt is one of the places everyone should visit once in a lifetime. Every year it attracts millions of tourists. Zermatt became internationally famous with the first conquering of Matterhorn on July 14, 1865. To reach Zermatt you have to take the “Glacier Express” since the streets were for private traffic in 1931. The impressive mountains are a true paradise for hikers, climbers and mountain bikers during the summer months. Visit the famous Kulmhotel Gornergrat, the highest hotel of the Swiss Alps. This experience includes observatory and shopping mall.

What to do in Zermatt?

Gornergrat and its viewing platform is one of the most popular destinations in Switzerland. Gornergrat train is the highest rack railway in Europe and, due to a reaction coupling system, it is modern, sustainable and energy-saving. The view is among one of the most beautiful in the world: Monte-Rosa-mountains with Dufourspitze (4'634), Gorner glacier and 38 mountains higher than 4‘000 m. Riffelberg and the first Zermatt mountain hotel combine panorama and history. Sunnegga mountain is a paradise for families, boasting bathing and BBQ areas at Leisee in the summer and sunny ski trails in the winter.

The music festival “Zermatt Unplugged” attracts thousands of fans every year and has established Zermatt as a legendary music venue.

What’s skiing like in Zermatt?

Zermatt lifts take you up to about 4,000 m above sea level. Here you find “Matterhorn Ski Paradise”, the highest ski resort in Switzerland, boasting more than 350 km of pistes of all level of difficulty. Theodul glacier is also open in the summer. Families and children find suitable pistes and areas in the entire ski resort. Heliskiing is offered by excellent mountain guides in collaboration with Air Zermatt.
