Where is Merano?

The city of Merano is a commune in South Tirol/Italy. It is home to around 41,170 people and is the second largest city in South Tirol. Merano is a well-known spa-resort located at the river Passer in the Etsch valley. Merano is a bilingual city – German and Italian. It is the region’s tourist and economic centre. Merano is 25km from Bolzano via MeBo motorway.

The mild and mediterranean climate makes Merano a popular destination for people suffering from lung diseases. Meran thermal spa is open all year and offers various therapies.

Nearby you find charming places such as Marling wine village, Schenna (offering a stunning view of Merano) with Schenna Castle, Algund, Burgstall, Hafling, Lana and many more. 

What to do in Merano?

Take a stroll through the lively city centre and visit one of the many cafés and restaurants or enjoy an evening in the theatre. The city’s highlight are the three town gates: Bozner Tor, Passeirer Tor and Vinschger Tor are the main entrances to the city. Do not miss out on the districts of Obermais and Labers. Passer promenades, Sissiweg, castles and villas, big parks and Trauttmansdorff castle – all can be reached by foot.

The spa resort is well known for the 52,000 km2 "Therme Meran or Terme Merano", featuring fifteen pools, eight saunas and steam baths, ten outdoor swimming pools, fitness centre, wellness and vital centre and lots more. Visiting Therme Meran is an absolute must for the whole family. 

Ötzi, the ice mummy, was discovered close to Merano. In Untermais you find a 5km horse racing track.

Merano is a great place to visit especially in the winter as there are several ski resorts to discover, such as Meran 2000 in Hafling, "Schnalstaler Glacier" in Schnalstal valley, "Schwemmalm" in Ultental valley, "Pfelders" in Passeier and "Ortler Skiarena Ski Resorts".
