Places to see in Annaberg

Annaberg is located in the Mostviertler Alps and belongs to the district of Lilienfeld.

In summer the fantastic mountain landscape offers a great number of hiking routes, e.g. hikes through the famous ‘Ötschergräben’ (Ötscher ditches) of the Ötscher-Törmauer Nature Park, which are also suitable for families. As Haflinger horses have been bred for the past 80 years in Annaberg, horse ranches and farms offer courses and rides for all ages as well as rider camps for children. Skilled riders may enjoy a stroll through nature on well signed trails. A big Haflinger show is held each year on the third Saturday of August on the Joachimsberg-mountain.

Open-air concerts are organized all summer, often local specialities are offered. The Seespitz-festival is the highlight of the Annaberg summer season. It takes place every first Saturday in August and attracts many visitors also from Germany. Artists from Austria and other countries hold watercolour workshops during the summer months.

For more than 900 years Annaberg has been well known as one of the pilgrimage stops of Austria’s oldest pilgrimage route, the Via Sacra – the holy road to Mariazell. There are several sights along this route: the Baroque church of Joachimsberg with baroque high altar, the Josefsberg Parish Church and the vicarage of Josefsberg with murals showing wood-cutters at work in the Ötscher forest around 1830. The Annaberg Way of the Cross is also worth visiting. It has been designed according to drawings of the Annaberg painter Prof. Sepp Gamsjäger.

Annaberg is not only an important stop along the holy road, but also an independent place of pilgrimage: each summer a family pilgrimage to the St. Anna pilgrimage church (1217) takes place. This pilgrimage was already very popular in the Middle Ages and even members of the royal family took part.
In winter Annaberg is the perfect family skiing area with 20 km of beautiful ski-runs for all levels of ability plus nine ski-lifts and a children’s land with beginner’s lift.
