What's Going On in Erlenbach im Simmental?

The idyllic village Erlenbach Simmental lies at the foot of Mt. Stockhorn, one of the most scenic mountains situated in the foothills of the Alps. The prominent rock head at the entrance of the Bernese Highlands can be seen from far away.

How to Get to Mt. Stockhorn?

Stockhorn Cableway was already opened in 1969. To get to the valley station it takes only 30 minutes from Bern, and 15 minutes from Thun. Timetables of the cable car and the railway are synchronised. The cable car ride is already an interesting adventure. It takes 20 minutes to reach Peak Stockhorn at an elevation of 2,190 m above sea level. A 70-metre-long tunnel leads directly to the Stockhorn North Face viewing platform next to the panorama restaurant. Visitors are rewarded with a striking view of Thun, Lake Thun, Aare and Gürbetal Valley and the Midlands as far as the Jura Mountains. If the weather is clear you can even see the Black Forest. If this is not exciting enough, get your kicks by entering the skywalk with a vertical drop of 400 m under the platform.

What's Going On on Mt. Stockhorn?

The area around Mt. Stockhorn is an excellent hiking and climbing paradise. The varied climbing area is divided into 12 sectors with 120 different climbing routes. Lake Hinterstocken and Lake Oberstocken are very popular among fishers, as they are stocked with rainbow trout. Fishing is allowed daily after snow melt till the end of summer season. In the winter even ice fishing is possible at frozen Lake Hinterstocken. Real tough visitors plan an overnight stay at the igloo village, where they can enjoy Swiss delicacies with home-made hot wine and fondue at the igloo bar.

Mt. Stockhorn has no ski lifts in the winter. But this is no problem, as renowned ski resorts such as Gstaad, Adelboden and Grindelwald are in spitting distance.
