Where is Sterzing (Vipiteno)?

The Italian town of Sterzing (Italian: Vipiteno) is in the Eisack valley in the north of South Tirol. The community also includes Ried, Thuins and Tschöfs. Sterzing sits between Jaufen pass, Brenner pass and Penser Joch and was therefore an important trading town. It is 15km from the Brenner pass and the Austrian border. Sterzing is the most northern town in Italy and one of the highest in the Alps.

The river Eisack, flowing past the old town, is the second biggest river in South Tirol. Brixen and Klausen are also located in the Eisack valley.

Hiking or skiing holidays Sterzing

Explore the stunning mountain scenery on hiking or mountain biking tours in the summer. Rosskopf mountain (Italian: Monte Cavallo) boasts a fantastic panorama of the Dolomites, Sarntal Alps, Zillertal Alps, and Stubai Alps. Enjoy a ride with "Rosskopf Panorama Mountain Coaster" and then relax at one of the traditional on-mountain huts.

You find the gondola bottom station near the town centre, it takes you up Rosskopf – the sun terrace of Sterzing and the ideal starting point for various hiking, skiing or tobogganing tours.

Sterzing has a lot to offer also in the winter: perfectly groomed slopes, tobogganing runs, x-country skiing trails and snowshoeing paths. Rosskopf ski resort featuring 20km of piste is only a few minutes away. Here you also find the longest flood-lit toboggan run in Italy. Are you ready for your skiing holidays with your family: children will have fun on the easy slopes and the instructors of Sterzing ski school.
