Where is Kössen?
Kössen in Leukental valley is part the Kitzbühel district located in the Austrian state of Tirol. It is home to around 4,400 people and sits right at Unterberghorn mountain. Kaiserwinkl tourism region includes the villages Kössen,Walchsee, Schwendt and Rettenschöss and is one of the popular destinations of the Kaisergebirge Mountains along with Kitzbühel and St. Johann in Tirol.
Kössen is the first Tirolean village you pass when traveling from Germany to Austria. The Bavarian towns of Reit im Winkl and Schleching are only around ten kilometres away. Kössen sits at 588 meters above sea level in a wide basin between the Chiemgau Alps to the north and the Kaiser Mountains to the south. Unterberghorn, the local mountain of Kössen and Kirchdorf in Tirol, is at 1,773 meters, Hefferthorn at 1,735 meters above sea level. Most of the massif is part of the Hefferthorn - Fellhorn - Sonnenberg Nature Reserve. Fellhorn, located on the eastern side of Achental valley on the border to Germany, is 1,764 meters high.
