Kössen in Leukental valley is part the Kitzbühel district located in the Austrian state of Tirol. It is home to around 4,400 people and sits right at Unterberghorn mountain. Kaiserwinkl tourism region includes the villages Kössen,Walchsee, Schwendt and Rettenschöss and is one of the popular destinations of the Kaisergebirge Mountains along with Kitzbühel and St. Johann in Tirol.
Kössen is the first Tirolean village you pass when traveling from Germany to Austria. The Bavarian towns of Reit im Winkl and Schleching are only around ten kilometres away. Kössen offers a great variety of hotels and guesthouses to choose from. Campers feel at home at the “Euro-Camp Wilder Kaiser” campsite both in summer and winter. Kössen sits at 588 meters above sea level in a wide basin between the Chiemgau Alps to the north and the Kaiser Mountains to the south. Unterberghorn, the local mountain of Kössen and Kirchdorf in Tirol, is at 1,773 meters, Hefferthorn at 1,735 meters above sea level. Most of the massif is part of the Hefferthorn - Fellhorn - Sonnenberg Nature Reserve. Fellhorn, located on the eastern side of Achental valley on the border to Germany, is 1,764 meters high.
Kaiserwinkl in Tirol is considered one of the most beautiful hiking and cycling region in western Austria, attracting many visitors in the summer. Those spending their summer holidays in the region can choose from a great variety of mountain bike trails and cycle paths. Many trails are perfect for short hikes with children. The easiest way to reach Unterberghorn is by cable car. Explore the high-altitude trails and enjoy the breathtaking view over the countryside. Numerous huts and mountain pastures, such as Bärenhütte, offer traditional Tirolean snacks.
