Where is Canillo located?

Canillo is a municipality in the north-east of Andorra with around 6,000 inhabitants and is part of the renowned Grandvalira ski resort, one of the largest in the Pyrenees. Situated at around 1,530 m above sea level, Canillo is considered the "gateway to the high mountains" and boasts an impressive backdrop of peaks, forests and valleys. The village center is characterized by traditional stone houses and radiates the original charm of the region. The village owes its name to the light-colored rocks and mountains that dominate the landscape around Canillo.

What can you do in Canillo?

The peaceful mountain village far away from the hectic traffic is not only a popular mountain and winter sports resort, but also has numerous cultural assets to offer. Worth seeing is the church of Canillo, which at 27 meters has one of the largest bell towers in Andorra. Also worth seeing are the old mill "Moli Vell" and the Romanesque church of Sant Joan de Caselles, which is built in the Lombard style. Inside you can still see original wall paintings from the middle of the 12th century. For two-wheeler fans, a visit to the Motorcycle Museum (Museo de la Moto) is a must. Machines from 1900 - the oldest motorcycle is a Francaise Diamante - to the present day are exhibited there. Numerous popular festivals are also celebrated in the town: Such as the "Burning of January" (Crema del Gener). A tree is set alight on the last day of January. Depending on how long and hot it burns, it is said to indicate how long and cold the winter will be.
The "Roc del Quer" viewpoint offers an impressive view of the landscape. Pure adrenaline can be found on the 603-metre-long suspension bridge ("Pont Tibetà Andorra"), which can be crossed at a height of 1,875 meters. The Camino de Canillo route is an easy walk lasting around three hours. Along the way, you will pass several places of interest: the church of San Joan de Caselles, the oratory of San Bernat de Menthon, the iron cross forge, the church of San Serni, the sculpture of Charlemagne, the church of San Crea, the seven-armed cross and the church of San Miquel. Another popular hiking trail in Canillo is the "Vall de Juclar - Estany Primer de Juclar" (walking time approx. 4 hours), which leads through the lower Juclar valley to the Juclar hiking hut at Lake Juclar. Do you like playing golf? Then try a hole-in-one on the Soldeu golf course, the highest golf course in Europe. The Mon(t) Magic Family Park is also very popular. The Mont Magic Zip-Lining is also located here: you start at a height of 40 meters and travel 550 meters at speeds of up to 80 km/h. The adrenaline-filled ride is accompanied by fantastic views of Lake Llac del Forn.

What can you do in Canillo in winter?

Canillo is located in the Grandvalira ski area, with 210 kilometers of slopes in the areas of Canillo, Encamp, El Tarter, Soldeu, Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa. Here you will find seven slopes of all levels of difficulty, as well as a ski school, restaurants, children's areas and freeride areas. The three snow parks have a lot to offer: From a kicker line and a freestyle academy to a night park and events or competitions. If you haven't had enough skiing during the day, you'll get your money's worth with night skiing. The night ski slope in Pas de la Casa is just 20 minutes away from Canillo. The après-ski stronghold of Grandvalira is also located there. But you can also turn night into day in Canillo itself and party in various bars. If you prefer to go off-piste, you can take a turn in the ice rink, enjoy a ride on the longest zip line in southern Europe - the Mont Magic Circuit - or whizz down the Màgic Gliss toboggan run .
