The canton of Nidwalden is located in central Switzerland, south of Lake Lucerne, and borders the cantons of Obwalden, Lucerne, Uri and Schwyz. At around 276 km², it is one of the smallest cantons in Switzerland and has a population of around 44,000. The capital is Stans, a town rich in tradition with a historic village center. Geographically, Nidwalden is characterized by impressive Alpine landscapes and the centrally located Lake Lucerne. Well-known excursion destinations include the car-free mountain village of Engelberg (near the border with Obwalden), the impressive Stanserhorn cable car with revolving restaurant on the summit and the surrounding hiking and winter sports regions. The challenging Nidwaldner Höhenweg trail connects Stanserhorn with Niederbauen and offers multi-day mountain hikes through the Uri Alps. Family-friendly hikes along the chapel trail near Wolfenschiessen offer cultural flair. A visit to Klewenalp above Beckenried is particularly rewarding, offering a fantastic panorama over Lake Lucerne. After the cable car ride to Klewenalp, a hike suitable for baby carriages takes you to the Stockhütte, past fireplaces and playgrounds. Bikeboard descents or paragliding flights provide a special thrill. In winter, 40 km of pistes, toboggan runs, winter hikes and snowshoe tours await you.
