Where is Spain?

Most of the Kingdom of Spain is located in south-western Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. The national territory also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic and some smaller islands off the coast of Morocco. On the European mainland, Spain borders the English enclave of Gibraltar to the south, Portugal to the west and Andorra and France to the east. The origins of modern-day Spain date back to the 11th century BC, when the area was settled by Phoenicians. Over the centuries, the country with its almost 5,000 kilometers of coastline developed into an important maritime power. Today, almost 50 million inhabitants live in the 500,000 km² kingdom. Spain is a parliamentary monarchy with the king as head of state; political power lies with the elected government. The four official languages are Castilian (Spanish), Catalan, Basque and Galician.

Sun, snow and sport in Spain

Spain has a very diverse landscape. Numerous mountain ranges run through the country. With peaks of over 3,400 meters, the Pyrenees are the mightiest massif in Spain and attract numerous sports enthusiasts in both summer and winter. Winter sports have a firm place here, and the Sierra Nevada in Andalusia is particularly popular: the highest ski resort in Spain offers modern slopes, guaranteed snow and a fantastic view as far as the Mediterranean. In the Pyrenees, well-known ski resorts such as Baqueira-Beret, Formigal and La Molina offer a variety of slopes, snow parks and trails for cross-country skiers. With the webcams in Spain, you can bring the vacation feeling of the Pyrenees home with you and get the latest weather information at the same time - ideal for planning your trip.
During the warm summer months, the Balearic Islands and the Costa Brava are real tourist magnets. There is hardly a European who does not associate Mallorca, Ibiza or Lloret de Mar with vacations and sunshine. The Canary Islands - also known as the "islands of eternal spring" - are a popular year-round destination. In recent years, Fuerteventura has developed into a kitesurfing hotspot where a number of international competitions are held every year.

Spain up close: art, pleasure and passion

Spain has much more to offer than sandy beaches and slopes. The country's extensive history and culture can be experienced in a particularly impressive way in the major cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Zaragoza. Famous artists such as Dalí and Pablo Picasso have lived and worked here. The Spanish national soccer team has also achieved worldwide fame, not least thanks to its success in the European and World Cups. Within the country, soccer has long been a national passion and is deeply rooted in everyday culture - it is played on the streets with just as much heart as in the stadiums. Just like soccer, culinary culture is an inseparable part of Spanish identity. Instead of quick meals, there are convivial get-togethers over tapas, long dinners and lavish family celebrations. Regional specialties - from paella in Valencia to jamón ibérico and gazpacho in Andalusia - reflect the diversity of the country.

What is the weather like in Spain?

The weather in Spain is as diverse as the country itself: In the green north of Spain, for example in the Basque Country or Galicia, an oceanic climate ensures mild summers, humid winters and plenty of rain. The lush vegetation and rather temperate weather provide a stark contrast to the dry south. In contrast, the central plateau around Madrid and Castile has a continental climate. The summers here are hot and dry, the winters surprisingly cold - with some frosty nights.
The weather in the sun-drenched south is completely different: in Andalusia, the summers are long, very hot and virtually rain-free. Places like Seville and Córdoba are among the hottest cities in Europe. The webcams in Spain not only offer fascinating live impressions of the current weather, but also reviews of past months - perfect for making travel plans, finding the ideal time for your next vacation or simply dreaming of sun, sea and mountain panoramas.
