The Slovak Republic is a landlocked Central European country that was created on January 1, 1993 from the division of the former Czechoslovakia. Slovakia borders Austria to the west, the Czech Republic to the northwest, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east and Hungary to the south. With an area of around 49,000 km², it is roughly the size of Lower Saxony. Around 5.4 million people live in Slovakia. Slovakia has been a member of NATO and the European Union since 2001. The capital and largest city is Bratislava (German: Pressburg), with just under 500,000 inhabitants. Picturesquely situated on the Danube, it is the only capital city in the world that borders two countries - Austria and Hungary.
Slovakia is geographically characterized by great diversity: The High Tatras (Slovakian: Vysoké Tatry), part of the Western Carpathians, is the smallest high mountain range in the world and a paradise for hiking and winter sports. At 2,655 m, the Gerlachspitze (Slovakian: Gerlachovský štít) is the highest mountain in Slovakia and the Carpathians as a whole. Other popular outdoor destinations are the Low Tatras (Nízke Tatry), the Danube Plain in the south and the Slovak Ore Mountains (Slovenské rudohorie). The city of Bratislava (Pressburg) is located in the border triangle of Slovakia, Austria and Hungary on both sides of the Danube. It is not only the seat of government of the Slovak Republic, but also home to several museums, theaters, universities and other important cultural, economic and scientific institutions. One of the city's most famous landmarks, the four-towered Bratislava Castle, which is also depicted in the official city logo, stands on a rock above the Danube to the west of the old town. Bratislava's city center is home to most of the historic buildings, such as the Old Town Hall from the 14th/15th century, the medieval St. Michael's Gate, the Gothic St. Martin's Cathedral, the Franciscan Church or the Art Nouveau-style St. Elisabeth's Church, also known as the "Blue Church".
Cultural highlights also await outside the capital: In Košice (Kaschau), the country's second largest city, the late Gothic Elisabeth Cathedral - the largest church building in Slovakia - is impressive. Prešov (Eperies) shines with magnificent town houses and a charming old town, while Nitra (Neutra), one of the oldest cities in the country, brings history to life with its castle complex. Last but not least, the country impresses with its variety of castles.
