The canton of Geneva

The canton of Geneva is located in the far southwest of Switzerland and borders almost entirely on France; to the east it borders the canton of Vaud. At only around 282 km², it is the second smallest canton in Switzerland in terms of area, but has over 500,000 inhabitants - one of the highest population densities in the country. The capital is Geneva, an international metropolis and home to numerous organizations such as the UN and the WHO. The canton lies on the south-western shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) and is characterized by a mixture of urban architecture, vineyard hills and Alpine views. The Rhône crosses the region, while Mont Salève provides spectacular views in the immediate vicinity of the city.
