The municipality of Podersdorf sits on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl in the Austrian state of Burgenland. Burgenland’s capital Eisenstadt is around fifty-five kilometres away. Nearby Neusiedler See - Seewinkel National Park is a popular recreational area for locals and visitors alike. Podersdorf is home to around 2,100 people and covers area of 41.7 km². Lake Neusiedl covers around 320 km², 230 km² belong to Austria, and the rest to Hungary.
Like Lake Balaton, Lake Neusiedl is one of the few steppe lakes in Europe and the largest drainless lake in Central Europe. At its deepest point, the lake is only 1.5 to 2 meters deep, it is fed by precipitation and drained by evaporation. The water level is subject to considerable fluctuations from 60 to 80 centimetres, depending on season, temperature, wind and precipitation. The lowest water levels are usually measured in August.
Pleasant temperatures and little rain make Lake Neusiedl a very popular summer destination. In fine weather Lake Neusiedl with its reed-free beaches draw water sports lovers, families and sunbathers of all ages. In summer, the water temperature of the lake is between 22 °C and 23 °C, perfect for swimming. Windsurfers and kiters will find great wind conditions on the northern beach in Podersdorf and the western lakeside. Explore the region on a bicycle tour on one of the many trails. Do not miss visiting Breitenbrunn, Neusiedl and Rust. Lake Neusiedl is a great place visiting any time of the year.
The region offers a varied cultural and event program throughout the year, with something for everyone, featuring both traditional and contemporary events. Guided tours through the national park are possible. “Neusiedler See Card” covers a wide range of services and is free for anyone staying overnight. Burgenland is renowned for its first-class wines. Hot summers and mild autumns provide ideal conditions for wine and fruit growing. The high-quality wines can be enjoyed all year round in wine taverns, family-run inns, exclusive award-winning restaurants and wine shops. Legendary “Heurigen” taverns offer young wines for tasting in autumn. Lake Neusiedl enjoys a continental, Pannonian climate with more than 2,000 hours of sunshine and over 300 days of sunshine per year. Average temperature is around fifteen degrees. May to September is the ideal time to visit the region with pleasant temperatures around 25 degrees, and little rain. July is the hottest month of the year. October to May sees most of the wind perfect for water sports lovers.
