Where is Annaberg?

The Lower Austrian Municipality of Annaberg belongs to the Lilienfeld District/ Mostviertel Alps and lies at an elevation of 976 m. It covers an area of 63.50 km² and is home to 545 people; in 1971 1040 people still lived in this remote village in Austria. The centre of Annaberg offers a fantastic view to Ötscher and all the neighbouring mountains.

What’s going on in Annaberg in the winter?

Beautiful Annaberg offers loads of leisure activities also in the summer. Tourists from all over the world come and visit this region. Families will enjoy a hiking tour through the famous Ötscher Gorges, part of Ötscher – Tormäuer Nature Reserve. Haflinger horses have been bred for the past 80 years in Annaberg and many stables offer riding lessons and rides. Watch one of the Annaberg Concerts at the market place and enjoy some local delicacies. The highlight of every summer season is Seespitzfest, taking place on the first Saturday of August. A trip to Mariazell is always worthwhile. Cyclist will be challenged on Mariazeller Street, leading from Türnitz to Annaberg.

Open-air concerts are organized all summer, often local specialities are offered. The Seespitz-festival is the highlight of the Annaberg summer season. It takes place every first Saturday in August and attracts many visitors also from Germany. Artists from Austria and other countries hold watercolour workshops during the summer months.

For more than 900 years Annaberg has been well known as one of the pilgrimage stops of Austria’s oldest pilgrimage route, the Via Sacra – the holy road to Mariazell. There are several sights along this route: the Baroque church of Joachimsberg with baroque high altar, the Josefsberg Parish Church and the vicarage of Josefsberg with murals showing wood-cutters at work in the Ötscher forest around 1830. The Annaberg Way of the Cross is also worth visiting. It has been designed according to drawings of the Annaberg painter Prof. Sepp Gamsjäger.

Annaberg is not only an important stop along the holy road, but also an independent place of pilgrimage: each summer a family pilgrimage to the St. Anna pilgrimage church (1217) takes place. This pilgrimage was already very popular in the Middle Ages and even members of the royal family took part.

Die Wandertour durch die bekannten Ötschergräben im Naturpark Ötscher - Tormäuer ist sehr empfehlenswert, auch und besonders für Familien. Da in Annaberg seit 80 Jahren Haflinger gezüchtet werden, bieten viele Pferdeställe Reitkurse und gemeinschaftliche Ausritte an.

Den ganzen Sommer hindurch werden in Annaberg Konzerte am Marktplatz abgehaltenen, im Rahmen der Veranstaltungen gibt es köstliche regionale Leckereien zu verkosten. Ein jährlicher Höhepunkt ist das Seespitzfest, das jeden 1. Samstag im August in Annaberg stattfindet. Für einen Ausflug nach Mariazell lohnt sich die Fahrt über den Annabergpass allemal. Rennradfahrer kommen auf der Mariazeller Straße ebenfalls auf ihre Kosten, in mehreren Kehren führt sie dabei mit einer Steigung von bis zu 12 % von Türnitz nach Annaberg.
