In summer the vast trail network of the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Reserve, the biggest in Lower Austria, invites to extended hikes. The entry to the nature reserve can also be reached from Lackenhofen by car and leads to the scenic attractions of the Erlaufschlucht (canyon): the Ötscher-stalactite cave is 575 mt long with a subterranean ‘lake’ of more than 100 m². Guided tours into the cave have been conducted since 1926. The numerous waterfalls are also worth visiting, especially the Treffling waterfall, Tormäuer, the Teufelskirche and also the Ötscher Mountain 1.893 mt high overlooking one third of Austria. In Lackenhof am Ötscher summer tourists may also enjoy mountainbiking, climbing, rafting, canyoning, Nordic walking, riding, tennis, fishing, swimming or inline-skating.
Lackenhof is located right at the bottom of the Ötscher Mountain. In winter it is the ideal starting point to the family skiing area with 19 km of perfectly groomed ski-runs of all levels of difficulty, 8 ski lifts, a snow park and a separate kids’ park for the young athletes. Cross-country skiers and winter hikers can enjoy nature off the pistes. The athletic offer in winter is complemented by ski routes, snowshoe walks, sleigh rides, curling and ice skating. One of the highlights in December is the 12 km sled dog race. The fastest team finishes in about 30 minutes.
