Mönichkirchen-Mariensee

Mönichkirchen is located on the eastern foothills of the Wechsel Mountains in Lower Austria. The market town lies at an altitude of about 970 m and has a population of around 600 people.

Around 1130 the Knights Hospitallers founded a hospital for the pilgrims visiting the area. The town’s name derives from mönich = monk and kirchen = church and was first mentioned in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages Mönichkirchen became a place of pilgrimage. For centuries the local population had been living from agriculture, but in 1881 tourism was introduced to the region as the Wechsel gondola was built.
The people of Mönichkirchen are very proud of the writer Anton Wildgans, who lived in the town for some time.

Today’s Mönichkirchen is a skier’s and hiker’s paradise. In winter Mönichkirchen-Mariensee ski resort features 13 kilometres of family friendly ski trails and a cross-country skiing trail. In summer the area is perfect for extended hiking or mountain biking tours. Archduke John Model Park shows models of famous Austrian buildings and farms on a scale of 1:12 and also displays the world’s biggest landscape nativity set.
