The town and the region’s tourism have boomed in the past few years. It is the cultural centre of Pongau, offering traditional holidays with lots of atmosphere. The autonomous holiday village of Alpendorf is about three km away, comprising many hotels, B&Bs and apartments.
The Snow Space Salzburg Ski Resort boasts 120 km of perfectly groomed ski pistes and 44 lifts, suitable for both beginners and experts. Sankt Johann is also the gate to the largest ski area in Austria, known as Salzburger Sportwelt or Ski Amadé.
Sankt Johann has also a lot to offer off the pistes, such as cross-country skiing, winter hiking, tobogganing or skating.
In the summer the beautiful landscape invites to extended hiking or mountain biking tours with many mountain huts along the way. The Alpendorf gondola takes you up Ghost Mountain (Geisterberg), featuring more than 40 adventure stations such as ghost house, water games, climbing towers and lots more.
There is also a lot to do in the valley: Liechtensteinklamm Gorge is one of the most impressive and most beautiful gorges in Austria and definitely worth visiting. Of course there are lots of opportunities to go swimming on a hot summer day. The town is home to many sights with fascinating history including Pongau Dome, Anna Chapel and museums.
