Where is Grän/Tannheim valley?

The small Austrian community of Grän is located in the Reutte district/Tirol and borders Bavaria/Germany. The village is home to 599 people and provides good transport links to Pfronten and the southern German region. Neighbouring communities are Tannheim, Bad Hindelang, Zöblen and Nesselwängle.

What to do in Grän?

Set against the backdrop of the Allgäu Alps, Grän offers a wide variety of leisure opportunities all year round. 

Athletic travellers are especially attracted by this picturesque village located in the heart of the Allgäu Alps, boasting great hiking tours and via ferratas of every level of difficulty. Himmelsstürmer Route of the Allgäu Hiking Trilogy is one of the most popular tour. 

It is the most challenging tour of the trilogy leading through very rocky terrain along the ridge at Oberstaufen, Balderschwang and Gradgehren.  When passing Schwarzenberg hut at Hinterstein, you have already managed a few short but exhausting stages of the tour. From there you go to Bad Hindelang, Schattwald to Tannheim valley.  The last ascent to Bad Kissinger hut then leads to Pfronten. This route is for experienced alpine hikers!

For those who prefer it more relaxed, there are many ways to spend the day – swimming in the crystal-clear Haldensee or an easy walk up Füssener Jöchle suitable for the whole family. Grän boasts many cycling and mountain biking trails for all ages as well as waymarked Nordic hiking and climbing routes. Do not miss to visit Haldensee cheese dairy, providing an insight to traditional cheese making. 

What to do in Grän in the winter?

Its snowy dream-like pistes and sparkling cross-country skiing trails, make Grän a small abut excellent ski resort perfect for the whole family. The gondola takes you to 2,000m where five downhill trails are waiting for you. Alternatively, you may ski the slopes on the north face providing stunning views of the Bavarian lowlands. Ski tourers will be thrilled by the great number of touring routes suitable for beginners and experts. The area around the bottom station is perfect for beginners and children taking their first turns on the snow. 

A shuttle bus will take you to further ski resorts of the region. If all that still isn’t enough powdering, then try Neunerköpfle mountain. An eight-person gondola takes you to this nature paradise in the winter as well as in the summer.
