Where is Hinterriß located?

The small, idyllic village of Hinterriß is located in the province of Tyrol in Austria in the district of Schwaz in the Karwendel silver region. It is located at an altitude of 928 meters and is the only permanent settlement within the Karwendel . Less than 30 inhabitants live here. Hinterriß used to be a mining site for iron ore; the mineral was mined there as early as 1484. The miners built the"Maria auf der Schmelz" chapel , which became a popular place of pilgrimage, especially among the Bavarians, and still is today. In the 16th century, the valley was known as a hunting and forestry area. Today, tourism dominates the small village. Around twelve kilometers into the valley is the alpine village of Eng. It is located on the Großer Ahornboden, in the south-eastern quarter of the Karwendel mountains at the western foot of the Sonnjoch group.

What can you do in Hinterriß?

One of the most famous and beautiful sights in Hinterriß and Eng is the Großer Ahornboden. This idyllic spot is home to over 600 maple trees, some of which are very old, and this natural monument was voted the most beautiful place in Tyrol in 2014. The Großer Ahornboden is located at the end of the toll road to the Engalm and is only accessible between spring and fall. The Ahornboden has been a nature reserve since 1927 and is considered one of the most beautiful high Alpine pasture areas in the Alps; an ideal place for hiking, cycling and enjoying nature! Popular hikes in the Rißtal valley include the tour to the Birkkarspitze, the Mahnkopf and the Steinfalk. If you get hungry and thirsty afterwards, you can stop off at one of the numerous huts. Besides the Engalm, the Falkenhütte, the Karwendelhaus, the Tölzer Hütte and the Lamsenjochhütte are highly recommended. The aforementioned chapel "Maria auf der Schmelz" and today's Church of the Virgin Mary Schmelz is also a well-known excursion destination in the region.
