Where is Schönau am Königssee located?

The idyllic municipality of Schönau am Königssee is located in the Upper Bavarian district of Berchtesgadener Land in the state of Bavaria, in the very south of Germany. Around 5,400 inhabitants live here on an area of 131.62 km². The municipality consists of seven districts, the showpiece of which is the Königssee lake, which is up to 190 meters deep, with the baroque church of St. Bartholomä. Alexander Humboldt already described the village in the Berchtesgaden National Park as one of the"most beautiful landscapes on earth". It is therefore not surprising that Schönau am Königssee is the third largest tourist municipality in the whole of Upper Bavaria after Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The 1,874 m high Jenner is a popular panoramic mountain in the Berchtesgaden Alps. The modern Jennerbahn cable car takes visitors from the valley up to around 1,800 m. The most beautiful sight in Schönau is of course the fjord-like emerald green Königssee. It is a mountain lake between the slopes of the Watzmann and Hagengebirge mountains. The lake is one of the cleanest lakes in Germany and is over seven kilometers long. A highlight is a boat trip on the lake, where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the surrounding mountains in peace and quiet. The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä is also located directly on the western shore.
