Where is Constance?

The city is situated in Baden-Württemberg/ Germany at the banks of Lake Constance near the Swiss border – at the river Rhine. It is home to 84,736 and belongs to Freiburg district. The German-Swiss border runs along the south-western and southern edge of the city, demarcating it from the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen. 

Neighbouring communities are: Reichenau, Allensbach, Kreuzlingen, Tägerwillen, Gottlieben and Meersburg, which can be reached by car ferries within 15 minutes.

The city districts Paradies and Old Town, also called “Schweizer Seite” (Swiss Side) are located south of the river Rhine, while newer districts are situated north of the river. Constance boasts a 34 km-long bank line.

Constance is also home to several memorial sites, theatres and sacred buildings. Some of the most important sites are the Council of Constance, Imperia, imperial fountain and Konstanz Cathedral (“Münster Unserer Lieben Frau”). Find calm and relaxation in one of the wonderful city parks. The most beautiful one is Constance City Park, south of Dominican Island. Further parks are Herosé Park and Hoerlé Park at Staad district at the banks of Lake Constance.

One of the most popular attractions and highlights is the mega aquarium Sea Life Constance. Discover various exotic animal and fish species in different themed areas, which makes it an ideal destination for the whole family or explore rare animals and plants at Wollmatinger Nature Reserve on Reichenau island.

If the weather is fine you have a marvellous view of the Alps. Recommended vantage points are the tower of Konstanz Cathedral, Fürstenberg or Purren, the highest elevation of Litzelststetten.

Mainau Island also belongs to Constance. Known as the flower island it attracts many tourists throughout the year, boasting breath taking scenery, unforgettable events, a butterfly house and a stunning view of the lake. Another highlight is a boat trip on Lake Constance.

Constance is situated at the banks of Lake Constance, which means milder winters than in the rest of Germany. In the summer it is often hot and humid with little wind and high temperatures.

January and February are the coldest months whereas July and August are the hottest, seeing top temperatures of 27.5 °C.
