The municipality of Neuschönau is situated in the Bavarian district of Freyung-Grafenau (Germany) and is home to about 2,200 people. It sits at the Donau-Wald region of the Bavarian Forest close to the communities of Hohenau, Sankt Oswald-Riedlhütte and the Czech municipality of Modrava. More than two-thirds of the community area is part of the Bavarian Forest.
Lusen mountain at 1.373 m is the areas highest peak.
A very popular destination is Neuschönau tree top trail – a 1.3km walk through the forest’s treetops leading to a 44m high vantage platform offering a stunning view the Bavarian Forest National Park. Established in 2009, the tree top trail is the longest in the world and a place to pause and relax.
At the open-air wildlife habitat located between Neuschönau and Altschönau, it is possible to watch wild animals like lynx, elk, bear and wolf in their natural environment. The 3km loop trail is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

Hikers love this region: 1,373 m Lusen is the fifth tallest mountain of the Bavarian Forest, several trails lead to top offering a stunning view of the Bavarian Forest National Park and Sumava National Park. Lusenschutzhaus cottage is great place to rest and enjoy regional food.

In the winter x-country skiers can choose from 45 km of x-country ski trails including a high-altitude trail at Waldhäuser and the one from Guglöd to Altschönau. As there is always a lot of snow in the winter, there are many tobogganing runs, winter hiking trails and snowshoeing routes. Waldhäuser ski resort is very popular among families also offering ski lessons and equipment rental. Großer Arber ski resort is very close.
In the summer have fun at the swimming lake boasting big lawn and adventure playground.

Neuschönau enjoys a continental climate with average temperatures of 20.9°C in July and -6°C in January. The summer is a very pleasant time of the year while the winter is very cold with lots of snow. The month of June sees the most rain.
