Schierke am Brocken is a district of Wernigerode in the district of Harz (Hochharz) in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The town is located in the Harz/Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park and borders the Harz National Park to the north. At 1,142 m, the Brocken, Schierke's local mountain, is the highest mountain in northern Germany. In its early years as a tourist destination, from the 1890s to the 1940s, Schierke was known as the "St. Moritz of the North". The magnificent villas and hotel complexes, which are still preserved in many places in the town, are evidence of this glamorous era. After a period of tourist stagnation in the post-war years, these historic buildings were extensively restored after the fall of communism and still lend the town a unique charm today. Some of these charming accommodations can be booked via the booking platform on our website. Schierke also has a special literary significance: in his work "Faust", Johann Wolfgang von Goethe set the famous "Walpurgis Night" scene in the "Harz Mountains, region of Schierke and Elend".
