The Schleswig- Holstein municipality of St. Peter-Ording sits on the tip of Eiderstedt Peninsula at an altitude of three metres above sea level. The village is home to 3,968 people and covers an area of 28.32 qm2. Population density is 140 persons per square kilometre. The peninsula’s highest point is Madgalenenspitze, a 16m dune.
Comprising several districts, St. Peter-Ording is characterised by many kilometres of beach, unique dune landscapes and houses on stilts. Extreme weather events are quite common in this area and wandering dunes and storm floods caused problems to the local population in the past. The church had to be moved twice. The North Sea currents are responsible for very intensive tides. The change from ebb to flow can be watched every six hours.
One of the many highlights is a 1059 m pier leading through salt meadows right to the beach. Photographers love to take pictures of it. St. Peter-Ording is a popular movie and TV location. The village also hosts several events throughout the year, such as the Hang-glider Festival or the Kitesurf Masters, which are very popular among athletes and locals, alike.
Both active vacationers and nature lovers will enjoy the twelve kilometre long and two kilometre wide sandy beach, offering just the right conditions for wind and kite surfing, beach volleyball, beach sailing or just relaxing in one of beach chairs. Special areas close to the pier and St. Peter-Ording/north are especially designated for pets. Fun in the water is also possible on cold days as the Dune Spa is located right at the beach, featuring adventure sea pool, sauna and wellness centre.
Visitors should never miss to join a mudflat hiking tour. Organised tours are offered all summer. Joggers and walkers will enjoy the great number of hiking trails. Discover the history of the Vikings along the Viking-Friese trail, best to be explored on a bike.
