Timber frame houses, colourful events and music, picturesque Harz countryside for hiking and biking in the summer or for skiing in the winter – checkout our live webcams at Wernigerode and at Schierke for the current weather report of today, tomorrow or the upcoming weekend and our 5-day forecast.
Wernigerode Castle overlooks the city majestically and can be seen from far away. Inside the castle some rooms are open for visitors, showing the former residence of the Earls of Stolberg-Wernigerode, who lived there until 1930. The historic city centre is dominated by medieval timber frame houses. At the market place you find the town hall and Wohltäterbrunnen (fountain).
In summer many restaurants and cafés invite you to have a rest and taste some of the regional delicacies in medieval atmosphere. Do not miss to visit some of the many museums in Wernigerode: The Harzmuseum (the museum of local history) informs you about the history of the town, fauna, flora and wildlife in the woods, as well as developments in art. The aviation museum showcases more than 50 aircraft and helicopters and more than 1000 exhibits. The Museum Schiefes Haus (Museum Leaning House) shows works of art and art photos of places of interest and town history.
Every year the Wernigerode Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra organises Wernigerode Castle Festivals, which take place in the courtyard of the castle from the end of July to the end of August. Do not miss the town hall feast in June. On many different stages bands perform all kinds of music such as German pop, Irish folk, country & rockabilly and rock & pop. There are also many events for young and old and a special kids programme. Stroll along the medieval market, the book flea market and all the food stalls offering delicious food and beverages.
Many other events take place throughout the year, such as Museumsfrühling in March, Walpurgis Night Festivals on April the 30th, the mid-German pottery market at Pentecost, Neustädter Wine Days at the beginning of July and the Chocolate Festival chocolArt in October and of course the very popular Christmas Market: from Dec.1st to Dec. 22nd the brightly decorated façades of the timber frame houses and the stalls at the market place turn Wernigerode into a magical Christmas paradise.
Wernigerode is the main station of the well-known Harzer Narrow-Gauge Railways: Steam trains of the Harzquerbahn Railway connect Weringerode with the southern town of Nordhausen, and the Brockenbahn Railway connects the city districts of Drei Annen Hohne and Schierke with Brocken.
In summer Wernigerode is the perfect starting point for numerous theme trails in the Harz with different levels of difficulty. Brocken offers several demanding mountain biking tracks, whereas the smooth Harz foothills are ideal for easy bicycling tours passing many places of interest and monasteries.
Wernigerode is also a centre for winter sports activities, such as skating in the ice stadium, sledding, snowshoe hiking in the snow-covered Harz countryside, cross-country skiing on the extensive cross-country skiing trail network of Schierke district or skiing and ski jumping in Zwölfmorgental ski resort at Brocken – you will be spoilt for choice during your winter holidays in the Harz region!
