Where is Makov?

This charming place is nestled in the Kysuca Valley between the Javorníky Mountains and Turzovská vrchovina in Slovakia. It is about five kilometers from the border with the Czech Republic and is located in the northwest of Slovakia. It is only about 30 kilometers to Bílá in the Czech Republic. The village is situated at an altitude of 580 to 1000 meters and belongs to the Cadca district. The highest mountain in the region is Veľký Javorník with 1071 meters.

Right near the village there is a ski resort Kasárne Javorníky. Due to its altitude it is one of the best ski resorts in Slovakia. The favorable location in the north of the country provides sufficient natural snow on the slopes in winter. The ski resort has three perfectly groomed slopes. Two more are under construction. The Kasárne Javorníky ski resort offers slopes of different difficulty levels for beginners to advanced skiers, as well as charming cross-country ski trails and idyllic hiking tours in the Javorník Mountains and the Beskydy Mountains. Thus, it is the perfect destination for a ski vacation in Slovakia. The ski resort offers a wide range of hotels, accommodations and restaurants. The ski resort extends in the Kysuce nature reserve and is an air health resort with air quality similar to the High Tatra.

 

Sights in Makov


If you are not in the mood for winter sports, the sights of this charming Slovak municipality are worth a visit. Aschengasse (ash street) in Trojačka is an over 100 year old alley of rare oak trees. The chapel in Vavricov is located in Čierne u Vavricov and is about 140 years old. It features a statue of the Virgin Mary and has a special double shingle roof. In Kršlisko there is a chapel built around 1900 with statues of St. Peter and Paul in whose honor a holy mass is held annually. Other sights in the village are the special and rare tree species (lime, elm, spruce, etc.) and the old chapels.

How to get to Kasárne Javorníky?

The ski resort is located 13 kilometers from the center of the village and is easily accessible by car all year round. There are two roads leading to the destination. The first road is on the side of the Slovak Republic and leads to the village center in the direction of Kopanice. The second road is on the side of the Czech Republic and leads along Veľké Karlovice, Podťaťé and Kasárne.

From Austria, it takes about three hours by car from Vienna to the ski resort. Depending on the route, it is some 250 to 300 kilometers. From Germany it takes a little more than five hours of driving.
