Where is Sierra Nevada located?

Sierra Nevada is an impressive mountain range in the south of Spain, in the autonomous region of Andalusia. The western part of the mountain range belongs to the province of Granada, while the eastern part is located in the province of Almería. The Sierra Nevada is an approximately 100-kilometre-long section of the Betic Cordillera, also known as the "Andalusian Fold Mountains", which stretches over 600 kilometers from the Bay of Cádiz to the Valencia region. The mountain range runs parallel to the Mediterranean Sea and in some places reaches right up to the coast. The core area of the mountain range is the 86,208-hectare Sierra Nevada National Park, which has been a protected area since 1999. The Sierra Nevada is also the highest mountain range on the Iberian Peninsula, with the 3,482-metre-high Mulhacén as its highest peak. Mulhacén is the second highest mountain in Spain and is only surpassed by Pico del Teide on Tenerife. From November to May, the peaks are covered in snow, which has earned the Sierra Nevada its name as the "snow-covered mountain range".
