Where is Prien am Chiemsee?

Prien am Chiemsee located in the German state of Bavaria is the largest town on Lake Chiemsee. The market town is part of the Chiemgau cultural landscape and belongs to the district of Rosenheim. The Upper Bavarian climatic and Kneipp spa town of Prien is home to around 11,240 inhabitants and covers an area of 20.7 km². The town sits on the shores of the lake and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. Chiemgau region, stretching from Munich to Salzburg, not only attracts visitors with its Bavarian charm, but also with its vast offer of outdoor and cultural activities.

How big is Lake Chiemsee?

With an area of 79.9 km², Lake Chiemsee is the largest lake in Bavaria and the third largest in Germany. There are many lakes in the south of Germany, but only very few with islands. There are four islands in Lake Chiemsee: Herreninsel (also known as Herrenchiemsee), Fraueninsel (also known as Frauenchiemsee), Krautinsel and Schalch. The islands of Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee can be reached by the Chiemsee boat service, departing from Prien and Gstadt several times a day. The most famous sight of the Chiemsee region is Herrenchiemsee Castle on Herreninsel, built by King Ludwig II. The castle is a scaled-down copy of Versailles Palace and is home to magnificent baroque murals and paintings as well as the King Ludwig Museum. Fraueninsel is home to around 300 people.

What to do at Lake Chiemsee in winter?

In the winter, Chiemgau is a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts, families as well as for those seeking relaxation. Kampenwand ski resort in Aschau am Chiemsee is not far from the “Bavarian Sea” and boasts slopes of all levels of difficulty. The modern ski resort looks back on a long history, with the first winter sports enthusiasts taking the cog railroad from Aschau to Wendelstein more than 100 years ago. Kraimoos children's ski lift near Bernau on the southern shore of Lake Chiemsee is the perfect place to take the first turns on skis. X-country skiers will be thrilled by 90 kilometres of perfectly groomed trails. The trails lead past Atzing, Sachrang and Reit im Winkl through the Alpine foothills. There are many toboggan-runs around Lake Chiemsee. Curling is a Bavaria tradition, so give it a try. Fun is guaranteed!
