The twin lakes of Kochelsee and Walchensee have inspired many important artists, including the German painter Franz Marc. Since 2008, Kochel am See has been home to the Franz Marc Museum, which has been a popular meeting place for art enthusiasts ever since. In addition to the cultural offerings, the climatic health resort is an ideal starting point for excursions and tours in both summer and winter. A special excursion destination is the Walchensee power plant, which was put into operation in 1924 and is one of the largest storage power plants in Germany.
There are well-developed hiking and cycling trails along the Kochelsee, with a particularly beautiful hike leading up to the 1,731-metre-high Herzogstand, which can be reached on foot or by taking the Herzogstand cable car. You will be rewarded with a fabulous view of the lakes and the Alpine foothills. The breathtaking view can also be experienced from the comfort of your own home with the live cam on the Herzogstand in Kochel am See. Water sports fans can also enjoy swimming, fishing or diving at Kochelsee. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can take a trip on a motorboat or relax at the end of the day in one of the village's beer gardens.
